Turriff being not far away, we drove to the competition for
what was to be a very mild, yet not too cold day.
after routinely relaxing, we got out our instruments and tuned
up as normal.
The tone of the pipes was a bit flatter than normal, but it
was true and mellow. P/M Dave didn't want to push the sound
as there was a lot of moisture in the air. This proved to
be a masterstroke, as other bands who had pushed it, were
struggling all day. Everyone was confident, and relaxed which
made our Grade 3 performance very good indeed however, we
still weren't counting our chickens!!!
Grade 2 was a less impressive affair that seemed to drag a
bit as people got tired.
The results at the end of the day were good though; 1st in
Grade 3 and 4th in Grade 2.
With this being a North east championship too, there was a
multitude of trophies. This gave P/Cpl Jobie the opportunities
to pull rank and request that the Bass Drummer Kay marched
in front of the band with the trophies while he took the opportunity
of a lifetime to play Bass at Massed Bands (It was great fun
and I think I should have won a prize for best Piper on Bass!!!).
